While being phased out globally under the Montreal Protocol, R22 remains the dominant refrigerant in systems installed before 2010 that are still in active service. R410A is the current standard refrigerant for all new AC installations in Kuwait — higher pressure, ozone-safe, and compatible with modern scroll and rotary compressors. R134a is used in automotive air conditioning and some commercial refrigeration applications. Newer low-GWP alternatives such as R32 and R454B are beginning to appear in the latest inverter split systems. Regular coil cleaning is one of the most impactful maintenance tasks for AC systems in Kuwait, where airborne dust and sand rapidly foul both evaporator and condenser coils, reducing heat transfer efficiency and forcing the compressor to work harder. Alkaline coil cleaners are used on evaporator coils (aluminum fins, indoor side) to dissolve dust, grease, and mold. Acidic coil cleaners are more aggressive and suited for heavily fouled condenser coils. Fin cleaners penetrate between tightly packed fins without requiring pressure washing.
